Breaking the Camera Mold

The problem with photography, well for me, is photographers! Over the years the more I've met seem to focus on brands and pixels and they seem to have missed the fun of story telling and sharing life images. Of course this is not true of all photographers but there is many that fit this category.

The problem with photography, well for me, is photographers! Over the years the more I’ve met seem to focus on brands and pixels and they seem to have missed the fun of story telling and sharing life images. Of course this is not true of all photographers but there is many that fit this category. So imagine the reaction many have in the age of content creation and influencers, it make traditional photo sharing sites like Instagram, and now Threads, a battlefield. So, imagine the upset a camera like Caria must bring to them.

The Caria Content Creation Camera

The Caria Camera by Camera Intelligence

I have had this camera for a while now except when I purchased mine it was known as the Alice Camera and as mine was number 07 (107) off the production line it was handbuild in the Watford based shed of Vik, the CFO of the company. The Caira (developed by London-based startup Camera Intelligence, formerly Photogram/Alice Camera) has generated polarized commentary across the photography and creator tech space. Conceived initially on Indiegogo in 2020 as an open-platform, AI-accelerated Micro Four Thirds (MFT) camera for content creators, its evolution into the Caira has shifted the discourse from crowdfunding excitement to technical skepticism and identity debates.

My Alice camera reunited with it’s builder Vik Kumar – September 2026

Recently I attended a launch event by Camera Intelligence at the Digital Catapult offices in Kings Cross. They announced Generative Video Editing – “Nano Banana for video editing.” Powered by Google’s Gemini Omni 1.1 Flash (the “any-to-any” generative model featuring advanced world-understanding first introduced at Google I/O 2026) and Runway’s Aleph 2.0, Camera Intelligence is the first company to embed video generation models with real-world understanding directly into a mirrorless camera system. Through the Caira app, the new capability will let users apply visual and camera-motion effects in-the-moment to footage they have already captured with Caira via a series of templates guided by natural language.

A British Deep-Tech Beacon
In a field usually led by big international companies, Camera Intelligence is a bold British attempt to change how visual media is created. The team started building at a workbench in Watford and now shows advanced neural technology at Digital Catapult. They have always focused on the future of imaging. The next era of visual storytelling will not just be about who makes the best lenses, but about who can make cameras smarter. With support from the UK’s deep-tech community, Vishal Kumar and his team are showing that Britain is ready to take the lead.
